Your liver filters everything you eat, drink and breathe, all day, every day. When it's carrying too much, you feel it: bloated, sluggish, puffy, stuck. This week's Angel Cleanse is built to lighten that load. Here's how each ingredient on the menu does its part.
Why your liver needs a lighter week
Your liver clears waste in two steps. First it breaks things down, then it packages them so your body can move them out. Both steps run on raw materials: amino acids, choline, healthy fats and plant compounds that switch on your liver's own detox enzymes.
A cleanse helps in two simple ways:
- Less coming in. Every ingredient on the Angel Cleanse menu is organic, local and made fresh from whole foods. Studies show that switching to an organic diet lowers the pesticide residues measured in the body within days. Less coming in means less for your liver to clear.
- More of what it uses. Each ingredient below gives your liver something it needs to do its job.
1. Dandelion: the bitter that gets bile moving
Bitter greens like dandelion stimulate bile, and bile is how your liver carries fat-soluble waste out through the gut. Herbalists have used dandelion for the liver and gallbladder for centuries, and in lab and animal studies it protected liver cells from damage.
On the menu: our Morning Elixir, the "All New" Dandelion Detox Juice, with green apple, lime, celery, romaine, dandelion and ginger.
The honest note: human trials are still few. Think of dandelion as a traditional daily support, not a treatment.
2. Cabbage, broccoli and arugula: greens that switch on your detox enzymes
When you chop and chew cruciferous vegetables, they release compounds like sulforaphane. These turn on the liver's "phase II" enzymes, the ones that package toxins so your body can flush them out. In a Japanese trial, adults with fatty liver who took broccoli sprout extract for two months saw their liver enzymes improve.
On the menu: chopped green cabbage in the Viral Greens Bowl, arugula in the Goddess Greens Bowl and Loaded Chicken Club Salad, and broccoli, arugula and spinach in the Pureed Greens Mineral Broth.
The honest note: the trial used a concentrated extract. On the menu you get smaller amounts, every single day.
3. Ginger and turmeric: calm the inflammation
Inflammation is what turns a fatty liver into an injured one. In small controlled trials of people with fatty liver, daily ginger lowered liver enzymes and inflammatory markers. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, lowered liver enzymes across several trials.
On the menu: ginger in the Dandelion Detox Juice and the Pureed Greens Mineral Broth, and both ginger and turmeric in our 72-hour Bone Broth.
The honest note: the trials used supplement doses. In food, it's gentle support you get every day of the cleanse.
4. Eggs: the nutrient that moves fat out of the liver
To send fat out of the liver, your body needs choline, and eggs are one of the richest food sources. When volunteers were put on a low-choline diet, most developed fatty liver or other signs of organ strain within weeks. Women after menopause were among the most affected, because estrogen helps the body make its own choline. If you're over 40, this one matters.
On the menu: a fried egg in the Goddess Greens Bowl and the Turkey Burger Bowl, and a medium boiled egg in the Loaded Chicken Club Salad.
The honest note: this one is well established. Choline and liver fat is one of the clearest nutrient links in liver research.
5. Olive oil and avocado: swap the fat, lighten the liver
The Mediterranean diet, built on olive oil, vegetables, herbs and legumes, has the strongest evidence of any eating pattern for reducing liver fat. In one crossover trial it lowered liver fat even without weight loss. The monounsaturated fat in olive oil and avocado takes the place of fats that drive fat storage in the liver.
On the menu: the olive oil, honey, tahini and lemon dressing on the Viral Greens Bowl, avocado in every bowl, and garbanzos in the Loaded Chicken Club Salad.
The honest note: strong evidence, and it's the pattern the whole menu is built around.
6. Bone broth: building blocks for your master antioxidant
Glutathione is the molecule your liver attaches to toxins so they can leave the body. It's built from three amino acids: glycine, cysteine and glutamate. Our bone broth simmers grass-fed beef bones for 72 hours, pulling out the collagen that makes it rich in glycine. Leeks, in both of our daily broths, add sulfur compounds, which the liver uses in its detox steps too.
On the menu: the daily Bone Broth (grass-fed beef bones, ginger, turmeric, celery, leeks, carrot, apple cider vinegar) and the Pureed Greens Mineral Broth (arugula, spinach, broccoli, cilantro, celery, leeks, ginger).
The honest note: in older adults, glycine plus cysteine raised glutathione levels. Those studies used supplements; broth is the food version.
